This is a great example of the type of work that a dedicated amateur astrophotographer can do. This is not my work; it’s some guy in England. Very nice.

There’s an article by diCicco and Walker in the April 2009 S&T that’s worth checking out online. It’s a 100megapixel image of the area bordered by Canis Major, Auriga, Monoceros, and Eridanus. The whole thing was done with 3nm Ha filter from a suburban Boston backyard.
