The Coulter build quality surely was a variable. I found a sky and telescope review once that said the secondary was not centered in the tube and could not be adjusted, just the “spider” metal cut to the wrong length. That could have happened to a lot of people.

I wonder how much of Coulter’s reputation for having mirrors that are “just so-so” was really “Coulter’s choice of building materials was just so-so”… only one way to find out.

Apparently that thick “spider” really affected planetary views.
