The spot/notch in the wood shown in the image is a reference index precision marker….. isn’t it?
I can live with it. I had to run the router in 3 passes per edge; one to square it up, and one to round over each side. That’s a lot of routing. The fact I only screwed up 3 or 4 times is a testament to how careful I
was being. Me making this telescope is like NASA dropping guys on the moon — everything I was doing was the first time I’d ever done it, so as long as I got it done and didn’t make any unrecoverable mistakes, I count myself lucky.

The varnished wood looks really nice. The surface of the varnish is a bit yucky, but it still brings out the grain of the wood nicely.

I choose not to notice the router bites.
